On to London

2 April 2007

On to London! In Singapore we saw nothing other than the airport. In fact, we saw only one terminal, but like the other terminals, it is one vast, comfortable shopping mall. You can buy almost anything you want and the shops are open 24 hours per day. We had some breakfast and went to the departure lounge and boarded the plane. It was all very efficient as just about everything seems to be in Singapore.

Once on board and in the air breakfast was served. I decided to try Lor Mai Kai which turned out the be glutinous rice with chicken, black mushrooms and chestnuts. Absolutely delicious. Virginia had the more traditional poached eggs with hollandaise sauce, hashbrowns and bacon.
Once again a wonderful flight except we had a serial farter in front of us. I suppose one could say the flight really stank!

We arrived in London and cleared quickly and easily. It is surprisingly warm, 20C. Heathrow, after Changi, is awful. No baggage carts and it as if it is designed to see how far you can be made to walk before you can go through customs and immigration. On the other hand, after some really bad experiences clearing because of long queues and poor service, this time we were through in a matter of minutes. Our bags had arrived and we went through the green lane for those who had nothing to declare and caught the Heathrow Express to Paddington and then a Taxi to our flat.

There were some problems with checking in. We are staying in a bed-sit, that curious all-in-one British institution. We had gone through an agency which had not kept the actual flat people properly in the loop. Things were soon sorted out but it was interesting to find out that had we dealt directly with the flat owners we could have saved 29 pounds per day! Going through the agency meant bad service at an expensive premium. The flat itself is small. You know the expression, "hardly room to swing a cat," well this flat is so small you couldn't bend over to pick up the cat without hitting your head on a wall! It is clean and fairly new although the workmanship in upgrading it was not particularly good. The flat is located in Inverness Terrace, Bayswater.

We went out to dinner at a very pleasant, nearby Italian restaurant. The flat is located near Queensway which has just about everything you could want; restaurants, shops, several pubs, two tube stations, etc.
